Bibilical thinking v. Cultural thinking

John 1:14 (NKJV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

One of the things that has been on my mind and my heart for quite awhile now is that the church today no longer is influencing the culture, instead it has become influenced by the culture in her quest to become relevant. Here a few (OK maybe more than a few) “No Longer” statements that reflect how the church has become influenced by the culture rather than the Word.

No longer do we believe that God is the only one that can draw people. We have gimmicks, how to conferences, books, etc. written on how to grow God’s church.

No longer is the Bible the only resource for how we should live our lives. We have brought psychology and self help into the messages from the pulpits

No longer is just preaching the Gospel enough. We have to be relevant. (Since when did the Bible and the Gospel become irrelevant?) It is more important to make people comfortable by making the Gospel palatable. The Gospel is a sword and it is going to be offensive.

No longer is the Bible the only thing needed in order to draw kids into Sunday School. We have big screen T.V.(s), games, game tables, refreshment bars, (e.g. FUN!).

No longer is teaching our young girls the importance of being modest and being set apart from the world in how they should look and dress. We have young ladies dressing in short skirts, showing their bellies, low cut cleavage tops and tank tops that leave little to the imagination when they come to church. Men and young men can’t even come to church anymore without having temptation dangled in their face intentionally. Dressing like as I have described has a purpose and that is to entice. They no longer are taught respect for how God created man and wired him much less what he created women to be (inward beauty is more important than outward beauty). Is it any wonder why men in the church are stumbling when it comes to sexual temptation? They can’t even go to church any longer without seeing women and teen girls dressed to draw attention to their bodies and outward appearance.

No longer are children and young people being throughly indoctrinated with what the Bible says so that they will not stray into the world as they go out into the world once they leave their parents homes. Cults such as the Mormons put Christians to shame when it comes to making sure their children are strong in their beliefs.

No longer are church services about coming before a HOLY God in reverence. We have made services “fun” and relevant to meet OUR needs.

No longer does the church follow the principals of discipline. We have become more concerned about offending people than following God’s direction in how to handle scandals and disobedience. It is now swept under the rug, whether it is infidelity, divorce, etc. Just as we lovingly discipline our children to teach them, so does God discipline to teach us. He would not have put those guidelines in the Bible had he not meant for them to be used.

As ponder these “No Longers”, one prevailing theme stands out… It is all about us and our needs for worship and not what God needs, deserves and desires. The church as become so caught up with with the church growth movement and seeking guidance from men in building their church that God has been left out. Who better to seek guidance from in building HIS church is GOD, since the church is HIS not man’s.

I’ll end this post with an article Steve Camp that is both in an article on Christian Worldview Network and is also posted on his blog.  You can read the full post dated May 16, 2008 at .  Below is an excerpt of what he wrote.

“What Is needed today is a Scriptural setting forth of the character of God-His absolute sovereignty, His ineffable holiness, His Inflexible justice, His unchanging veracity.

What Is needed today is a Scriptural setting forth of the condition of the natural man-his total depravity, his spiritual insensibility, his inveterate hostility to God, the fact that he is “condemned already” and that the wrath of a sin-hating God is even now abiding upon him.

What is needed today is a Scriptural setting forth of the alarming danger in which sinners are-the Indescribably awful doom which awaits them, the fact that if they follow only a little further their present course they shall most certainly suffer the due reward of their iniquities.

What is needed today is a Scriptural setting forth of the nature of that punishment which awaits the lost-the awfulness of it, the hopelessness of it, the unendurableness of it, the endlessness of it. It is because of these convictions that by pen as well as by voice we are seeking to sound the alarm.” -A.W. PINK
